DESCRIPTION

Our Variable ND2-400 Filter can be adjusted to block 1 to 8.66 f-stops of light, giving you more flexibility in bright variable light.

By blocking up to 8.66 f-stops, you can use wider apertures in bright variable light for shallower depth of field effects, and slower shutter speeds for long exposure effects without overexposing your images.

Cinematographers can use our Variable ND2-400 Filter to create more cinematic effects in bright light.

For best results, only rotate within the MIN and MAX markings on the rim. For wide-angle and telephoto lenses, we recommend our Variable ND2-32 or ND8-128 or fixed ND filters. With wide-angle and telephoto lenses, rotate only halfway or until you begin to see vignetting. Lens caps and sun hoods need to be one thread size larger (ie. 62mm NDX uses 67mm lens cap).

All our circular filters come with a protective travel tin case, a recycled cleaning cloth, and recycled plastic-free packaging.

How to Use

Variable ND2-400 Filter 2Peak

1/4

Find your filter size
Search your lens and find the diameter symbol Ø followed by a number (e.g. Ø58 or Ø58mm). This can be found on the front or side of your lens – this magic number is your filter size. Note: Your lens focal length (e.g. 18-55mm) is not your filter size.
Variable ND2-400 Filter 2Peak

2/4

Place flat and screw clockwise
Excitedly behold lens in one hand and place flat on lens. Gently screw clockwise until just firm. Do not over-tighten – that which goes on must one day come off.
Variable ND2-400 Filter 2Peak

3/4

Slow your shutter
The variable f-stop darkening of your images allows flexible slowing of your shutter speed for motion blur effects.
Variable ND2-400 Filter 2Peak

4/4

Open your aperture
Or, you can adjust for the darkening by opening up your aperture, which creates a shallower depth of field. You can also combine both exposure setting adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my filter size?

Search your lens and find the diameter symbol Ø followed by a number (e.g. Ø58 or Ø58mm).

This can be found on the front or side of your lens – this magic number is your filter size. Note: Your lens focal length (e.g. 18-55mm) is not your filter size.

Should I buy a fixed or variable ND filter?

It depends on how, where and what you’ll be shooting.

Fixed ND filters block a fixed f-stop of light from entering your camera. Variable ND filters provide more flexibility and have a range of f-stops you can block by rotating the outer element. If you’re starting out with ND filters, we recommend a Variable ND so you have more flexibility while you’re learning how to shoot with an ND. If the light is likely to change often, a Variable ND saves you changing between fixed NDs each time.

Do Gobe ND filters have a colour cast?

No, Gobe ND filters have great colour neutrality.

There are a couple of reasons your images may show a slight colour cast when using an ND filter. Check your white balance settings. By restricting the light entering your camera, it may throw out your white balance settings. Manually adjust your white balance settings to reduce any colour cast.

What’s the best Variable ND filter for wide-angle lenses?

This one – or our Variable ND8-128 filter.

Our ND2-32 and the ND8-128 are both specifically designed for use with wide-angle lens' super-wide field of view. Variable NDs with a broader f-stop range, such as our ND2-400, have limited application with wide-angle lenses because the field of view is so broad. Variable ND filters consist of two polarizing filters, which can cause issues because the polarizing effect varies so much across the broad field of view of wide-angle lenses. This isn't a quality issue rather it's a physics restriction.

What’s the best ND to use with a telephoto lens?

Any of our 3Peak Fixed ND or Variable ND filters.

Because telephoto lenses use such high-quality optical glass and typically have so many layers of glass, we recommend you use our 3Peak professional range, because of its exceptional SCHOTT optical glass, on any lens with a focal length >100mm.

"Phenomenal ND filter. Smooth, yet not loose. Big factor to why I went with Gobe is for their sustainable practices!" – Chris bought our ND2-400 3Peak.

Excellent kit

I got my second Gobe ND Filter, and have to say the quality of the product is excellent and though I had seen commentary about the negatives of using a variable ND filter I have to say I have not had one issue, my second one is for my 5D MKiv and I can't wait to get some great shots with it.

Really good for shooting video

I use this mainly for shooting video. I use it on my 50mm 1.8 Canon lens. Since I like shooting 24fps, the shallow depth of field on this lens would be unusable without it as I have to keep my shutter at 50. I just keep it on all the time. When twisting the two layers of the filter, the action feels smooth and firm. There is no discernible color shift - maybe just a hint of a brownish tinge when higher settings are used. It fit my lens perfectly and screws on and off without getting stuck or squeaking. So far, I am very happy with this filter.
